Stained Class Commission: Paladin

Just dropping this in here to keep my own records in order, but also because I liked the way it turned out.

The commissioner, the delightful Asros, requested a Blood Elf Paladin with an Argent Dawn or Argent Crusade theme; after some discussion, we settled on an Icecrown Citadel setting to represent the character’s involvement with the Lich King quests. As the subject was a Holy Pally, I wanted to evoke Beacon of Light with the layout of the bakground, which seemed to work well with the coloring and overall scheme of the piece.

Please note this piece is not available for distribution. For more information on commissions, please visit our Deviant Art journal.

Welcome back to the Stained Class series!

I’ve been messing around lately with a few new artistic styles, and have gotten a great deal of inspiration from Medieval manuscripts and period stained glass pieces. I was so pleased with the way the original Priest piece turned out that I decided to execute all of the Warcraft classes in the same style in a series called ‘Stained Class’.

Today’s installation of the Stained Class series is that master of the ranged attack, the Hunter. With their traps, and arrows, tracking and pets, Hunters are as formidable at PvP as they are in raids and solo questing. I agonized for a long time over which pets to represent- how do you choose one or two out of all the available companions?- and finally came to the conclusion that the very breadth of choice is what makes pet ownership such fun. This Hunter has plenty of available slots.

I struggled, too over whether to create a Troll or Dwarf Hunter. In the end, classicism won out and Ironforge’s finest was called into service. I hope my many Hunter friends enjoy it!

Two items of general note:

(1) I’ve set up an FAQ for the Stained Class series. And yes, it includes the answer to what seems to be everyone’s most burning question: “What set is that character wearing?!”

(2) Several people have emailed me that their comments haven’t been showing up. I promise I’m not deleting them! Please note: If you use the words ‘stained glass’ anywhere in your comment, it gets eaten by a spam filter I set up for the absolutely insane number of stained glass spam comments I was getting.

Available, as ever, for any non-profitcredited use.

Today’s installation of the Stained Class series is the elusive Rogue, master of poisons and source of PvP nightmares. It took a while to think of a way to represent this complicated class, but I hope you rogues enjoy it. Now please stop sapping me.

(1) I’ve set up an FAQ for the Stained Class series; just click on the main ‘Stained Class’ link to the left to get back there. And yes, it includes the answer to what seems to be everyone’s most burning question: “What set is that character wearing?!”

PLEASE NOTE: If you use the words ‘stained glass’ anywhere in your comment, it gets eaten by a spam filter I set up for the absolutely insane number of stained glass spam comments I was getting. When the Warlock was posted, I checked and counted over 2,500 stained glass spam comments in my filter. Who knew?(And now I’ve said the ‘SG’ word three times in this post, so things are about to get ugly.)

Today’s installation of the Stained Class series is the black-hearted Warlock, master of death and decay (not to mention adorable demons). Representing all three specializations- plus a few key universal talents- was a particular challenge. I hope I’ve done the ‘lock population proud and prevented at least one Life Tap on my healing watch.

Once again, you guys get to choose which one I’ll knock out next. I have tons of ideas for each of the remaining four, and I’m looking forward to tackling the next class.

The Making of Stained Class: The Druid

I always think it’s endlessly entertaining to watch how things are made: crayons, sweaters, laws, sausages- you name it, I want to see the process from start to finish. I particularly love to watch people painting or drawing. To me, it’s the best way to improve as an artist, whether on the computer or by hand.

I’ve tried to make the process of creating the Disciplinary Action comics as transparent as possible to encourage anyone who has a story to tell to consider this medium as a non-frightening palette for expression; you can watch many of the comics come together live or archived on the Disciplinary Action Livestream.

For quite a while I’ve wanted to record the creation of the Stained Class pieces and turn them into a fast-moving short. Unfortunately, technical difficulties prevented the live recording from working, but I did finally manage to get it all working together and went back to the original files and recorded a brief walk-through of the Druid (though it was already completed).

There have been a number of requests to see the process in action, and I’ll certainly be recording the creation of the next piece (vote to choose who gets the next Stained Class here) in higher resolution. For the curious, I’m recording using Fraps and putting it together in Windows Live Movie Maker (shameful, I know, but trying to figure out Adobe Premier Pro made me want to shank someone).

Enjoy!
